Transitional Housing 

​What is the Transitional Housing Program?

The Transitional Housing Program in Kununurra consists of 40 transitional houses, providing housing management and support services for Aboriginal participants. The program has recently been extended into Halls Creek delivering 15 new houses, with eight completed in early March 2015.

The Transitional Housing Program in the West Kimberley will deliver a minimum of 40 homes in Broome and 20 homes in Derby. These homes are for eligible Aboriginal people who are committed to securing their financial independence and progressing towards home ownership or private rental. Applicants must be either employed or in training.

  1. What is Transitional Housing?

    Transitional Housing aims to assist eligible Aboriginal people into home ownership or private rental by providing opportunities to develop the skills needed to build financial independence and confidence.
  2. Where is Transitional Housing located?

    Transitional Housing is currently available in the East Kimberley and West Kimberley.

    In the East Kimberley, Transitional Housing is located in Kununurra and Halls Creek. There are currently 40 transitional homes in Kununurra and 15 in Halls Creek.

    In the West Kimberley, Transitional Housing is located in Broome and Derby. There are currently 31 transitional homes in Broome and 18 in Derby. A further nine homes will be delivered in Broome and two in Derby by June 2017.
  3. Am I eligible for Transitional Housing?

    Applicants must be living in the locality for a minimum of 12 months. Applicants must also be in either part-time or full-time employment, or paid training. If you have children, you must ensure they attend school on a regular basis.
  4. Can I still be eligible for Transitional Housing even if I don’t have children?

    Yes.
  5. Is a rental history necessary to be considered for Transitional Housing?

    No. A rental history is not a requirement. All applicants will be considered regardless of rental history.
  6. Am I eligible for Transitional Housing if I have accumulated debts?

    Yes, however there are limits to existing levels of debt for applicants.
  7. Is there a limit to how many people may reside in each home?

    Yes. Just like a private rental, participants must list family members who will be living in the home permanently. As with a private rental property, participants may have guests stay in the home. If however, guests stay for extended periods of time without being listed as a permanent household member, they may be required to leave the property.
  8. How does Transitional Housing relate to home ownership and private rental?

    Applicants are selected to participate based on their desire and commitment to purchase their own home or move into private rental. Participants are provided with an affordable rental property. Rent is based on the participant’s household income. This provides participants with the opportunity to save money towards the purchase of their own home.
  9. How are participants supported in Transitional Housing?

    Participants are provided with access to support services tailored to their individual needs. This allows participants to maintain employment or training, whilst being supported and assisted to develop financial and life management skills.
  10. What are my obligations if I become a participant?

    If you are selected as a participant you will be required to:
    • Sign a Residential Tenancy Agreement;
    • Pay the required security bond payment;
    • Maintain employment or full-time paid training status;
    • Ensure school-aged children in your household attend school regularly;
    • General upkeep of your home, both inside and out; and
    • Commit to ongoing mentoring and engagement of support services from a Support Provider.
  11. Do participants continue to receive support after they have moved into home ownership or private rental?

    No. When a participant transitions into home ownership or private rental it is anticipated they will no longer require support services.
  12. If a participant decides they no longer want to be in Transitional Housing and want to go back to public housing, do they get priority on the public housing waitlist?

    No. Participants are selected based on their commitment to Transitional Housing and achieving their goals of home ownership and financial security. If a participant withdraws, they need to secure alternative living arrangements. If they are eligible, this may include waiting for a public housing property to become available.
  13. Are moveable items such as furniture, included in the transitional homes?

    Participants are expected to bring their own furniture and other personal items.
