  • $16million for trainee and apprentice hostels in the Pilbara
  • Contributes to building sustainable Pilbara communities

South Hedland and Newman trainees and apprentices will have access to safe, secure and affordable accommodation with $16million from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program to fund new hostels.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said a partnership with BHP Billiton, the Pilbara Development Commission, Department of Housing and the Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) will enable more Pilbara residents to access training.

“The hostels aim to increase the number of indigenous and non-indigenous trainees who complete apprenticeships in the Pilbara by providing quality, affordable accommodation and support services,” Mr Grylls said.

“This is a great initiative to boost skills development in the Pilbara and will contribute to building a sustainable future for local communities.”

Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the South Hedland hostel would be constructed on the Pilbara Institute’s Pundulmurra Campus, with the Newman hostel’s design, capacity and site currently being finalised.

“The South Hedland hostel will be a 48-bed unisex facility, designed to expand to 68 beds, with additional accommodation for hostel staff and mentors,” Mr Marmion said.

“The Department of Housing will be responsible for managing the construction project and selecting an organisation to operate the hostels.”

BHP Billiton will contribute $11million for the South Hedland hostel and planning for the Newman facility. The hostel in South Hedland is expected to be completed in 2014.
