A happy outcome in Wickepin

Doug and family make Wickepin home

Due to difficulty in finding work following serious health issues, former public servant Doug, his partner and their daughter found themselves on the public housing waiting list. Unable to afford a private rental or to access Doug’s superannuation, the family became homeless and were living in a tent.

Desperate for a solution, Doug visited his local Member of Parliament’s office asking for help to house his family anywhere in WA. This urgent request was then sent to the Department of Housing where it reached Wheatbelt Regional Manager Attila Mencshelyi.

Happily, Attila recalled a property which had recently become available in the small regional town of Wickepin.

“Rather than have the property languish on the vacant list I offered it to Doug and he welcomed it with open arms. I explained that although Wickepin is very small, it’s only 40km from Narrogin which is a major epicentre for the area.

“From time to time properties do become available in the Wheatbelt which we try very hard to fill. There can be very little demand for homes in some of these small regional areas due to the few services on offer,” Attila said.

Doug is extremely happy with the way he has been looked after by the Department of Housing and the speed at which he and his family were able to move into their new home.

"It was amazing for us. We are very appreciative and very grateful to the Department for the prompt service we received.

“The issue for us was finding affordable accommodation in Perth, where the prices to rent are so high and houses are in such high demand. The Wickepin community is friendly and we have met people in town. My daughter Amelia's first birthday present is a home for her, myself and Cherry,” Doug said.

Doug is now looking for job opportunities in the town that he and his family are proud to call home.
