The WA State Government occupies approximately 600,000 square meters of office space across Western Australia. The portfolio includes some 400 leases with private sector landlords and 17 buildings that are vested in the Minister for Works. Accommodation costs consume up to 11 per cent of agencies' operating costs and the largest Government agencies occupy up to 30,000 square meters of space.

Aside from being a significant operating cost, Government office accommodation is an important part of Government service delivery, being the physical base from which many community services are delivered, including public housing, regional development and community justice services.

Government office accommodation can also play a large role in achieving wider Government objectives. Improving the sustainability of Government office accommodation can contribute to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and the location of Government services can support the planned development of our cities and towns.

Our Role and Responsibilities

The Department of Treasury and Finance, through the Government Office Accommodation Directorate, manages the State Government's Office Accommodation. The Directorate's objectives in doing this are to:

  1. Provide office accommodation that supports agencies' outcomes and service delivery.
  2. Manage the Government's office accommodation portfolio to achieve government objectives such as sustainability, disability access, occupancy density, and obtaining value for money.

The Directorates's role includes:

  • Procurement and administration of leased office space
  • Delivery of office fitout services to Government agencies
  • Management of Government-owned multi-tenanted office accommodation
  • Strategic planning for the Government's office accommodation portfolio and overseeing the Government's office acommodation polices.

Metropolitan Office Accommodation Strategic Plan

This Perth Metropolitan Office Accommodation Strategic Plan provides a framework for the procurement and management of government’s significant office accommodation portfolio across the greater Perth metropolitan area. As well as detailing five objectives for managing the portfolio over the next three years, the plan introduces a wider framework for all government accommodation managed by the Department of Treasury and Finance. This framework has been developed in response to feedback from our client agencies. It commits the Department to providing a more strategic view of the government office accommodation portfolio, supported by better information about agencies’ operational needs, and a clearer basis for making accommodation decisions.
