Strategic Directions for Housing Service Delivery

The Department of Housing and Works rental accommodation for more than 39,000 families on low to moderate incomes.

The Department owns some 39,000 rental properties throughout the state and has an ongoing capital works program to buy and build additional homes to increase its housing stock.

A key aim is to ensure that all Western Australians have access to affordable and secure housing. Subsidies ensure that tenants do not pay more than 25 per cent of their income in rent.

Special programs are available to assist people with special needs. This includes priority assistance for people in extreme need of housing and targeted housing programs for people with disabilities, Aboriginals, youth and other low income groups.

We also help people to access private rental housing by providing interest-free loans for bond assistance. This benefits customers by providing easy access to the private rental market while people wait on the list for their turn for public housing.

Long term tenants also receive valuable assistance to realise their home ownership dream when they purchase their rental home under the Goodstart home ownership scheme.

Homing in on the Housing Inquiry

The Inquiry into Aboriginal Housing made 165 recommendations,  these have been summarised into 24 key themes which will be available within a  few weeks, those themes will then be collapsed into six key workplan areas which are identified in the joint statement.
