Public Works Introduction

The Department of Housing and Works provides a range of building-related management services to deliver the State Government's Capital Works and Maintenance Programs. These services are delivered using extensive in-house expertise in asset planning, project delivery and maintenance planning for Government non-residential building. The Department is committed to ensuring probity, value for money and effective risk management in all aspects of its operations.

Construction Services

The Construction Services Directorate assists agencies with their asset planning to ensure projects are well-planned, and manages the delivery of projects in accordance with the whole-of-Government requirements and procurement policies. The Directorate ensures that agencies’ office accommodation needs are satisfied, consistent with relevant policies.

The Directorate's key responsibilities include:

  • maintaining effective relationships with agencies and assisting them with their asset planning needs;
  • playing a lead role in the project management and delivery of all mandated public works on behalf of agencies;
  • managing the planning and development of significant capital projects and special land projects on behalf of Government and agencies; and
  • facilitating the delivery of Government-owned and leased accommodation for agencies.

The Directorate has undertaken a number of initiatives in delivering its agreed outcomes, including:

  • promoting the new procurement framework and project evaluation process with agencies to foster effective project justification and planning;
  • identifying across-agency opportunities related to projects and promote a whole-of-Government approach to procurement;
  • developing various procurement strategies for delivering of capital works;
  • playing a lead role in the project delivery management of capital works to ensure consistent application of Government policies and procedures;
  • developing a five-year strategic plan for Government office accommodation in the Perth Central Business District; and
  • introducing energy-efficiency criteria for the selection of new office accommodation.
