The Building Codes and Regulation Branch provides advice to the Minister for Housing and Works, Director General, and the Department on building standards and regulatory matters and fulfils the state’s obligations under the Inter-Government Agreement on Building Regulation Reform.
The branch also maintains and develops the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Referenced Standards, provides advice and training for stakeholders on building industry regulatory matters.
Current projects include:
- Review of the BCA 2007 and its reference standards;
- Amendments to the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1960 to provide for the management of existing illegal buildings;
- Implementation of a new National Accreditation Framework for Building Surveyors,
- Bushfire compliance – building in bushfire prone areas;
- Maintenance of safety measures in completed buildings; and
- Provides the necessary policy, technical and administrative support to the Municipal Building Surveyors’ Qualification Committee, the Private Swimming Pool Technical Advisory Committee, and the Building Regulation Advisory Committee.
